Route 66: Chicago to California

Road Trips in US West Coast, United States

Known as the ‘Mother Road’ and ‘Main St, USA’, Route 66 is a drive through American history, the ultimate ghost-town wonder drive. Originally a commerce route for rural villages and officially decommissioned in 1985 in favour of Interstate 40, the dilapidated and at times inaccessible road is a nostalgic and enigmatic piece of American folklore. From East to West is customary, passing through derelict and working motels, petrol stations and diners; from Normal, Illinois’ famous Steak n’ Shake Diner, through Missouri, Kansas, the sandy plains of Oklahoma, which houses the Route 66 Museum, northern Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and finally, the light at the end of the tunnel in California’s Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue.

About us

Stuck at your desk? Gazing out at those grey skies and imagining you are somewhere else?

I want to go here is all about inspiring you to do something different - about encouraging you to check out a new experience or destination. It's simple - we post something new every day. If you like the look of it, send it to a couple of friends. If not, wait and see what tomorrow brings. And if it gets past the fantasy stage, we'll soon have links to research the experience further, but you can also send us an email, and we'll tell you where to look or book next.
