Berlin Holocaust MemorialTombs & Memorials in Berlin, Germany Designed to disquieten the senses, this four and a half acre site is covered in rectangular concrete slabs 2.38m x 0.95m varying in height from 20cms to 4.8ms, but in all other respects laid out evenly with path ways between them. Underneath the field is an exhibition where the names of all known Jewish Holocaust victims are listed. The site was opened in 2005 after an extensive designing process that began with a competition. The architect, Peter Eisenman, has come under fire because nowhere does it explain what the memorial is to and because the victim’s names aren’t included in the main structure. It’s also been described as ‘too abstract’, ‘unnecessary’ and ‘inappropriate’. But it’s definitely disquieting and eerily like a graveyard without being overtly morbid.
